Nepal Faces Another Earthquake this month

On October 22, the National Seismological Centre of Nepal reported a magnitude 6.1 earthquake that struck Nepal, with the epicenter located in Dhading, approximately 55 km (35 miles) west of Kathmandu.

This report is from Tsering Dolkar Tamang, from Ghyaru Village, Manang.

“It was early in the morning, and I was lying on my bed, working on homework and doing some research. This also meant my mobile phone had internet access. Suddenly, my phone buzzed, and I received an alert message warning of an earthquake that was set to occur in just 3 minutes. I wasn’t fully prepared, and I was still trying to comprehend the message.

Then, my bed started shaking from side to side, and the door was trembling. Though the earthquake wasn’t extremely powerful, fear gripped me, and my heart raced. I immediately jumped out of bed and went outside to check on my friends, asking them if they had felt the earthquake as well. None of them had. I showed them the alerts, but they confirmed they hadn’t sensed the quake. Nevertheless, it felt as though we had some prior awareness before the earthquake struck.

We decided to visit the school children, but to our relief, they were already on the safe football field, playing, and they, too, hadn’t felt the quake. This incident brought back memories of the devastating magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck Nepal in 2015, causing significant loss and destruction in our country.”

Note: Nepal is situated in an active seismic zone. You can contribute by donating items such as mylar blankets, headlamps, hard hats, work gloves, solar flashlights (torches), duct tape, loudspeakers, whistles, rescue tools, and any other survival equipment.

Pema Samdup of Grade 11.

Grade 11 at SMD

This year, we are offering Grade 11 in three streams: traditional Buddhist education, Management (Computer or Business), and Humanities. Classes are held during the early shift, from 6 AM to 10:30 AM.

“Tashi Delek! I am Pema Samdup, a student in Grade 11 at SMD High School. SMD has been providing tech-based education and computer science for many years. I am grateful for the opportunity to receive such an education. The practical and theoretical tech-based lessons I receive from my school have been invaluable in my everyday life. In fact, without this kind of knowledge, I would not have been able to adapt to today’s digital world. I wholeheartedly appreciate and want to thank our Thrangu Rinpoche and the entire SMD family for creating an environment that provides such opportunities. ” Pema Samdup, Computer Management Student

Kathmandu 15th Annual Marathon

On the 15th Kathmandu Marathon, our school’s 11 students participated in the 5k school category, and Choegyal Lama completed the 5k run in 15min 25 sec. He secured 3rd position among 300 students. Other SMD students are in the top 15 list. In addition to being a champion runner, Choegyal coached eleven others in the SMD team. Tsering Dolkar Gurung (Senior) went along with our marathon team to take photos and file this report.

“The Kathmandu Marathon is one of the oldest and national level marathons of our nation, Nepal. Which is held every year.It was my 1st time experiencing the Kathmandu Marathon. There were too many people and I was feeling nervous at first. I thought that I could not make it but fortunately, I got into the top 10 levels. It was very challenging. Participating in national-level sports events gives me a chance to interact with strangers which helps me to build self-confidence. – Sangye Dolma Class 10 (Sangye Dolma Sherpa placed fourth!)

“I was a bit nervous because it was my first time running in a national marathon. I thought of giving up in the middle of the race. I saw some of my friends running and I got motivated to run. I saw lots of dedicated people while running which inspired me a lot. From race, I learned to struggle and have to be consistent in everything that will help me to succeed. In addition, I successfully completed the marathon without any difficulty because we had trained one month earlier. – Yeshi Gyatso Class 9
