CELEBRATING OUR FOUNDER’S 91st BIRTHDAY

Visiting and paying Homage to our founder and Tsawe Lama Kyabje Yongzin Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche.

On 9th December, all of SMD – children and staff, bussed up to Thrangu Tashi Yangtse monastery at Namo Buddha to offer “Ku Sung Thuk” and Homage to Tsawai Lama Kyabje Yongzin Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche. There we also celebrated Rinpoche’s birthday without a massive crowd, and we got blessing from our Founder. All SMDers were so much delighted and blessed to see and meet Rinpoche.

Nepal Post Office

After a years long hiatus, the Nepal post office has begun to process outgoing mail to some countries. At SMD, we are sorting through all the reports and photos we’d prepared just as the pandemic was starting. We will send the reports the kids wrote, along with a new photo from this year.

We know that sponsors count on contact, so we will continue to send our monthly update – you can find the archive of updates here – http://himalayanchildren.org/news/

Ever Wonder What The Coloured Trim on our Uniforms Mean?

Blue is Sagarmatha House. Sagarmatha is the name of mount Everest in the Nepali language, and Chomolungma in Tibetan, which is the heart language of Himalayan folk.

Yellow is Sambhota House, named after Thönmi Sambhota, traditionally regarded as the inventor of the Tibetan script grammar rules and was first to translate the Buddha’s teachings.

Red is Songtsen House, named after Songtsen Gampo, the 33rd king of Tibet, and said to be the one who brought Buddhism to Tibet.

Inter House Boys and Girls Soccer Tournament

Inter House Soccer Tournament at SMD School

We have hosted the annual Inter-House Soccer Tournament. Our students love sports, especially soccer. From boys the Sagarmatha (Blue) won the tournament and from girls Srongtsen (Red) House won the Trophy.

School Cats – SMD Feral Cat Project

Five years ago, Choden Sangmo (one of our graduates) started a project to help homeless cats. Her winning argument was, “As Buddhists, shouldn’t be be trying to save lives?” She clinched her argument observation that, “No one helps cats,” and went on to cite examples of suffering she’d seen.

Since then, we’ve been feeding, neutering/spaying and vaccinating our school cats for rabies. This month we vaccinated for a virus (FLV) which is deadly for cats under a year old – shots + boosters will set us back a little over 300 USD. Cat food is imported (Shirley has 3 rescues at her home – their food cost more than her own).

The project has helped the ‘cat whisperers’ overcome fear and superstition that is widespread in Hindu culture, less so in Buddhist.
