Celebrating the Life of Our Kind Lama, Who Loved Reading

The first anniversary of the passing of our beloved founder, the Very Venerable Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche, into Maha Parinirvana.

Saka Dawa, the fourth month in the Tibetan lunar calendar, is dedicated to celebrating the Buddha’s life. The most auspicious day, Saka Dawa Duchen (the full moon day), marks one year since the loss of our beloved founder.

From SMD, Grades 8, 9, and 10, along with the school monks, nuns, teachers, seniors, and our staff, went to Namo Buddha to commemorate the 1st anniversary of our Kind Root Guru’s Parinirvana. We received blessings from Tulku Damcho and paid respects to the lifelike statue of our Tsawe Lama. Everyone sat in the dining hall to chant prayers, including Marpa’s Guru Yoga, with longing for the swift return of our Root Guru for the benefit of all beings.

Debra Ann – Director, HCF

Debra Ann, the Director of our US Foundation, the Himalayan Children’s Fund

Debra Ann was able to visit for the last days of prayers for Thrangu Rinpoche and, of course, check in on all the projects she supports, including SMD. SMDers love her, so she was welcomed with a bounty of hand-decorated notes filled with heartfelt thanks from SMDers for all she does for us.

Music Ross Is Back!

Music Seeds International (MSI) is a non-profit organization providing music programs for youth affected by poverty, war, and disease. We believe creativity is essential for a child’s development. This marks Ross’ 5th visit to SMD.

To all school directors, I heartily recommend Ross and MSI. By hiring him, you enable better outreach to children with limited resources. Check out some of the music made by MSI here in our school. Bring Back Peace  | Long Live the Tsawe Lama  | Pray for the World

Looking for a Host Family on Vancouver Island

Many families have helped SMDers continue their education by offering homestays. It is extraordinary generosity to take a student from another culture into your home. Some host families have hosted more than one SMDer: the Munnions in Lisbon, the McCall – Hayes collective in Red Deer, the Federicos in Halifax, Christy in Atlanta, and the Curtins, the Reichs and the Grahams in Zurich all hosted two each. The Schauchs in Squamish hosted three and so did the Jankowitzes in Zurich.

One of our girls has scholarship at a boarding school at the south end of Vancouver Island. She needs a family who could offer homestay for holidays when her school’s boarding programme is closed. (We don’t ask for summer holidays … SMDers who are in high school must come home for the long summer holidays, to reconnect with their own culture, language and the Buddha’s teachings.)

If you are coming to Nepal and you want to bring something for us, We Need:

* multitamins with minerals, tablet (non-chewable) form, adult dose. (We cut to recommended dosage).
* wart medicine
* antibiotic and fungal creams
