END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR: 2021-22

Exams Are Finished!

Results day will be on May 8th. The Grades 8 and 10 must wait a little longer until their results are published; early May for the Grade 8s. 10s. The Grade 10s will return to their villages until the government publishes the SEE results (possibly at the end of June) then they will return to Kathmandu to receive their graduation certificates.

Our New Children Need Sponsors

In November, we admitted the two batches of children who had been waiting since April 2020 and 2021. And this path month, we admitted the new 2022 children, like the little nomad girl, Nyima Lhamo Sherpa, pictured with the family’s ‘dzo’ (cow-yak cross). Our graduate Karma Tsewang Sherpa wrote,

“Because they are a nomadic family, it is not possible for her to go to the nearest public  school, which is already almost two hours away. They keep moving every month or so. In winter, they come down from the mountains and in summer, vice-versa. More so, there are still many people who believe in gender roles dictated in this patriarchal society. Her parents despite being uneducated want their daughters to escape that bubble.”

SMDers Reciting ‘Mani’.

The 28th Annual Mani Droubchen: April 21st to April 30th

From sunup to sundown, the sounds of chanting, punctuated by the big drums, the long horns and cymbals resound throughout the school compound. The prayer festival is open to the public, so we keep the children who are still in school safely away from the crowds, but they also like to repeat the mantra of compassion OM MANI PADME HUNG and are happy, because this year, they all have malas – prayer beads, so they can help, too.

The main aim of the puja is to recite 100 million Mani Mantras and this year,  the merit will be especially dedicated to the quelling of the pandemic, war and hunger. Our children are very happy to have malas – prayer beads, so they can help too.

A Wish For Humanity Fundraises For SMD By Connecting Art And Philanthropy

“We help women-led charities raise money for specific projects, so they can focus on their vision to change lives through education, protection and empowerment of women and children in distress. Many charities stay small. They don’t have the resources to work in the field and get their message out. So they become heroes you never hear about. We share their personal stories and highlight their charities through A Wish for Humanity.”  Visit Website

To our great delight, AWFH chose SMD! AWFH has pledged to raise funds to train two young women as health assistants, licensed to run remote health posts, so badly needed in the mountains of Nepal.

In Case You Missed It…

SMD children got their Typhoid vaccines.

New Kids’ Intake: Education for the Forgotten Children of the Himalayas – Education Changes Lives. Admissions Day for 2022-23 School Year: Watch Video

Proud of their Typhoid Vaccinations: All the kids under 15 years were vaccinated because typhoid (food and water borne) is highly endemic in Nepal. Our older ones had a vaccination when they were younger.

Child Protection – We ask your cooperation: SMDers may not have contact with adults on the via digital media. SMDers may not ask sponsors for anything. This also affords protection for sponsors from desperately poor family members who may see you as a meal ticket and may coerce the child into demanding things.

No outgoing mail: The Nepal Postal System cannot handle outgoing mail. Incoming mail is ok. Please remember to use children’s admission numbers in all correspondence — it really helps us.
