Welcoming Our New Boarders During Our Annual Hostel Night Celebration
Each year, we warmly welcome our new boarders. One by one, they introduce themselves, and we celebrate their arrival with joyful songs and dances. This year, we celebrated Hostel Night on May 19. As part of the celebration, everyone got a cuddly toy (good for bedtime which is when the new children tend to miss home).
Each new child reminds us why our founder, Kyabje Thrangu Rinpoche, started this journey – to give children a safe, loving home where they can grow, learn, and be themselves. He also wanted to preserve their Himalayan culture, language, and Buddhist way of life, while providing them with a good modern education. His hope was for them to grow up to be kind, capable people who could help their families and give back to their communities. We feel happy and proud to see his dream growing in every new child who joins our big family.

~ New Full Scholarship Program ~
We have launched a new full scholarship program for Grade 11 students. The application deadline is June 22. We aim to provide educational opportunities to deserving students from remote Himalayan communities, aligning with our mission to provide them with the tools necessary for their life ahead while helping to preserve their culture. As planned last year, we have also introduced a new stream from this year – Hotel Management for Grade 11.

Education Changes Lives – SMDers Pay it Forward
We are thrilled to share a beautiful example of SMD spirit in action! Tenzin Dolma Sherpa Dulal, an SMD alumna, generously sponsored three current SMDers to attend the First National Reading Conference – overing not only their registration but also their transportation for the two-day event.
Tenzin’s journey is deeply inspiring. After completing high school at UWC Adriatic, she pursued both her undergraduate and Master’s degrees in the United States. Now back in Nepal, she continues to give back to the community that helped shape her.
Thank you, Tenzin, for leading by example and for showing us how education truly comes full circle.

L-R: Ukesh Magar, Ang Lhakpa and Choegyal Lama
Chogyal and Ukesh have successfully completed their 40 km run from Boudha to Namo Buddha
They report:
“We started our run at 4:50 a.m. and reached Namo Buddha at 11:30 a.m. Karma Sherpa, Santosh Khatri, Pema Tsewang Gurung, Phurba Sherpa, and Tsewang Namgyal Lama were the cyclists who supported us with first aid, safety, and food management. Ang Lhakpa Sherpa also ran with us, and Phurbu Gyaltsen Gurung was our helper – he also ran halfway with us.”
Chogyal and Ukesh’s goal was to raise enough funds to help their classmates on scholarship in Canada fly home.
In case you missed it…
On May 12, we celebrated the 2649th Buddha Jayanti with a heartfelt program that began with a gathering outside the shrine, followed by a serene session of prayer and meditation.
Buddha Jayanti is observed on the full moon day of Baisakh in the Nepali calendar, and is also celebrated as Saga Dawa Düchen in the Tibetan calendar, which falls on the full moon of the fourth Tibetan month. It is one of the most sacred days in Buddhism, as it marks the three pivotal moments of Buddha’s life – his birth, enlightenment, and Parinirvana – all of which occurred on this same auspicious full moon day. watch video of the program on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tv9ARTwxws8&t=112s

When a letter and photos arrive from a sponsor, our students feel deeply grateful, excited, and happy.
