Rinpoche visited his monastery

Our Founder Very Venerable Thrangu Rinpoche arrived at the main monastery.

After three very long years, Khenchen Thrangu Rinpoche visited his monastery, Thrangu Tashi Choling in Boudhanath, near the school. Rinpoche also visited Thrangu Tara Abbey at Sitapaila near Swayambhu after five years. Rinpoche kindly accepted audience and bestowed kind advice to the nuns and also appreciated their effort and diligence in the study and practice of the Dharma.

Echoes of the Pandemic

As one may expect, the pandemic, the long shutdowns and no physical classes have impacted our children’s academic performance. Luckily, we have an excellent, dedicated team of teachers this year who are doing their best to help SMDers catch up on all that they missed.

L-R: Karma Tenjin Tamang, Ukesh Magar, Tenzin Lhamo, Tenzin Norbu, Choegyal Lama and Pema Tsewang

Kathmandu 5 Kilometre Marathon

Six SMDers ran in the marathon. Without any training, two placed at the top in a field of 800 runners. Choegyal Lama came in second and Ukesh Magar took fourth place.

Homeless Cat Project

With help from some of our sponsors, SMDers have been rescuing and caring for homeless cats for the last five years. Choden Sangmo started the project when she noticed no one was helping cats.

Recently, we found a wonderful local organization which helps us with sterilization and rabies vaccinations for a nominal donation. www.facebook.com/catmandulovers

Our former Manager, Karma Lekshey with brand new Scorpio back then in 2017

17 Years Ago We Bought This Mahindra Scorpio. We Need A New One

Mahindra is an Indian company – vehicles built for road conditions in Nepal and India. Our Scorpio is breaking down often and we cannot get parts in Kathmandu. The old one will go to Thrangu Monastery in Lumbini, where it is badly needed and where it will be easier to get parts as they are closer to the Indian border.

If you would like to donate, drop us a line himalayanchildren@gmail.com or visit our website https://himalayanchildren.org/how-to-help/make-a-donation/

Inter-House Boys and Girls basketball Competition

New BookAid To Life: Montessori Beyond the Classroom – “The author shares stories based on fifty years of Montessori work in thirty countries, first as a teacher of children from 2-18 in Montessori environments, then discovering ways to use Montessori principles in a variety of other situations”  http://www.michaelolaf.net/newsmarch2021.html

Dengue Fever: Thanks to global warming, Nepal is undergoing a dengue epidemic. It is a mosquito-borne virus, called ‘break bone fever’ in the Caribbean. When coming to Kathmandu bring mosquito repellant. If you would like to help keep SMDers safe, please bring a couple of extra bottles.

If You Are Coming To Nepal: If you would like to bring something – here are the requests:
Balls – basketballs, soccer and small soft ones for little kids
Indoor games – Pickup Sticks, Clue, Uno, Scrabble, Bananagram, Cards
Board games – Chess, Snakes & Ladders
.

Child Protection – We ask your cooperation: SMDers may not have contact with adults on the via digital media. SMDers may not ask sponsors for anything. This also affords protection for sponsors from desperately poor family members who may see you as a meal ticket and may coerce the child into demanding things.

No outgoing mail: The Nepal Postal System cannot handle outgoing mail. Incoming mail is ok. Please remember to use children’s admission numbers in all correspondence — it really helps us.
