60 New Kids!
At the end of November, we will be admitting 60 new children who have been waiting to join SMD School; some have been waiting for almost two years. Without previous education, they lack foundational language and math skills, and do not yet have the skills to study online. We are bringing them into the hostel (dorms) so they can get in-person instruction. They will be joined by all of our SMD students who have missed their schooling because they’ve had no internet access. Any of our students who do not have internet access will continue to take their classes online for now.
Please help us welcome all the new children! Each needs about $200 USD (for pillow, linen, quilt, uniform, play clothes, underwear, socks, school shoes, play shoes, slippers, backpack, toiletries and a tin trunk to keep everything stored away.
Donations marked ”New Kids” can be made through our non-profit charities. See our Make a Donation page for details.
If you have any questions, please write our SMD School Director & Fundraiser Shirley at himalayanchildren.org
New student – Nyima Lhamo Sherpa, Nomad
Nyima Lhamo was born to a nomadic family who move with their herds as the seasons dictate. Like all mountain children, Nyima works for the family’s survival. Because they are nomads, Nyima cannot go to a government school which is a two hour trek away and because they keep moving every month or so.
Her parents wish her to be educated at SMD, after seeing so many monks, nuns and SMDers come such a long away thanks to Rinpoche.

Off to Shawnigan Lake School
Yangchen Dolma Tamang is off to take up a full ride scholarship at Shawnigan Lake School in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada. See the happy smile? It took more than six months to get the study permit. Classmates Nima and Pema Dekyi have been in ICS, Switzerland and UWCRCN, Norway since August. All three applied at the same time.
In Case You Missed It …
Preserving Himalayan Culture: The opening/consecration Ceremony of Tsum Ripchet Mankhang Monastery was celebrated in mid-October. SMDers who are from Tsum went to help – they danced for joy. Watch Video
Climate change brings crop failure: A freak monsoon which started earlier this year than usual, and lasted much longer deluged Himalayan villages causing landslides, bridge washouts and blighted the crops.
No outgoing mail: The Nepal Postal System cannot handle outgoing mail. Incoming mail is ok. Please remember to use children’s admission numbers in all correspondence — it really helps us.
